THE CREEPING COUP

THE CREEPING COUP

The Creeping Coup!!!

Over the past few months, Mr. Trump has twice sent the National Guard into US cities without getting approval from local leaders once, in Los Angeles during immigration protests, and most recently to Washington, DC claiming violent crime was “out of control.”

In Washington, DC, Mr. Trump painted a picture of a city under siege diplomats murdered, a congressional intern shot, a federal worker beaten. He declared it a “liberation day” for the capital, saying he had to “take back our city.” He even used a rarely invoked law to partially take over the DC  Metropolitan Police, something no president had ever done before.

Critics say the language feels familiar the kind of crisis talk authoritarian regimes have used to justify grabbing more power. They point out that violent crime in DC is actually at a 30-year low. Yes, there have been high-profile attacks, but local police say these are isolated incidents, not proof of a city spiraling out of control.

The California  case is different. In June, during protests against ICE raids, Mr. Trump federalized the CA National Guard and sent 2,000 troops to LA without the governor’s consent. State officials fought it in court, arguing the protests didn’t meet the legal definition of an “insurrection.” A federal judge initially sided with California, calling Mr. Trump’s move unlawful, but the ruling was paused on appeal.

Supporters say Mr. Trump is doing what it takes to restore order. Opponents see something else a president testing how far he can push federal power into state and local affairs.

Some worry this is a rehearsal-

What happens if he refuses to leave office at the end of his term and calls in the National Guard to hold on to power at the end of his tenure?

History offers a warning. In 1933, the Nazis fanned fears of a fake communist uprising to strip away freedoms and crush democracy. America in 2025 is not 1933 Germany, but the lesson still resonates if you let “emergencies” justify eroding checks and balances, the system can rot from the inside.

Just a thought
